Welcome to Hungry Planet, an independent wholefood store run by HUPLA Wholefood Co-op.
We are individuals that have bonded together to form a co-operative group in order to run a shop, bakery and cafe.
We sell a wide variety of standard wholefood store items such as tofu, soya milk, juice, tinned pulses, local veg, local jams and more, all organic or fair trade wherever possible.
We also specialise in gluten free products and sell bulk gluten free muesli and a wide range of pasta to suit. Most of our products are stored and sold in a self-service format from our bulk bins and if you bring in your own containers you are entitled to a 10% discount on your purchases.
A small list follows; Grains, Nuts, Seeds, Dried Fruit, Flour, Tamari, Vinegars, Oils, Olives, Herbs and Spices, Faith in nature shampoo's and conditioners, Bio-D laundry liquid, multisurface cleaner, fabric softener and washing up liquid.
We can special order any items for you that we do not have in stock, if our suppliers have it! There may be a requirement to get a whole case if our suppliers wont split the case and we ask for prepayment for all special orders.
Our Bakery group makes a wide range of fresh bread, all sourdough from our own cultures and using Organic ingredients.
We do markets and stalls and other events, if you would like to book the bakery or cafe for an even please let us know. As a local community COOP we would ask for special consideration with regards to the pricing of a stall, (Preferably free) and as we all travel by bicycles or public transport we would also need a table.
If you are a store or other establishment that would like to stock our bread or cakes please let us know, we are currently delivering to shops in the local area.
We make loads of tasty things to eat! We regularly have gluten free cakes, a wide range of homemade chocolates and energy balls.
On the savoury side we offer a soup of the day, served with our own bread, and apart from our standard menu items usually have a special crafted just for you! These do vary drastically and mainly depend on the whims of our Chefs and what is available from our local veg suppliers. (Riverside Market Gardens and Green Cuisine Organics).
Apart from the obvious reasons of not supporting the credit card companies and banking system, we are a small store with not a great deal of turnover. Consequently, We do not have a card machine at present so all purchases must be cash. We might consider a card machine in the future, but this would have to be after we can afford to pay ourselves minimum wage, plus the costs of the machine and card service on top. We also do not have a land line, and there are currently no plans for one until the same conditions are met. At the bottom of this page we will keep our hourly wage for the previous month posted so you can see our progress!
